Sustainability
A Commitment to the Future of our Planet
Here at R3 Builders, we place a lot of emphasis on building relationships that last. That commitment also extends to our planet – we’d like to it to be healthy and vibrant for a very long time, which is why we incorporate sustainable practices and materials into all of our services. We measure the environmental impact of our projects using the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) guidelines, and can present you with numerous options for incorporating green technologies and energy-efficient materials into your building. Our goal is to help reduce our collective impact on the environment and develop buildings that demonstrate environmental stewardship.
Sustainability Case Study: DOSA
When DOSA, an upscale South Indian restaurant, approached us to build their second location on Fillmore Street in San Francisco, they asked for a plan that was designed around sustainability. Here are just a few of the “green” objectives we accomplished:
- New wood framing was certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
- Energy-star rated equipment (including refrigeration units) was installed
- Ultra-high efficiency equipment was used for heating, ventilation and cooling
- Window tinting was used to reduce heat gain and loss, for 20% energy savings
- Faucets and flush valves met or exceeded requirements for low-flow rates
- Interior materials were chosen from non-toxic renewable or recycled sources
- Finishes, including paints and sealants, were non-toxic and VOC-free
Green Practices Inside R3
We’ll not only tell you how you can make your project more environmentally friendly, but we also practice sustainability in our own business.
We’re working hard to reduce our fuel consumption. Whenever possible, we drive two fuel efficient cars – a Toyota Prius and a Honda Fit – to conduct on-site visits and client trips.
We take energy conservation seriously. Our offices have energy-star rated appliances, and we set our light fixtures and office equipment on energy conservation mode.
We like trees. We limit our paper consumption and printing as much as possible, sending and sharing most files electronically and asking our vendors to do the same.
We’re big proponents of “recycle and re-use”. We have a recycling program on site for items including batteries and e-waste, to limit our contributions to the landfill.
We have a garden in front of our office. We planted a vegetable garden with tomatoes, radishes, peppers and other plants for our staff to enjoy.
